Should I delete it?

In a world of technology and social media, how easy is it to disconnect from the internet or delete the social media accounts?  I decided to take a closer look into whether or not a person should remove apps or delete their account all together. I chose this topic because I have long since thought about deleting Facebook and have held off on doing it for a number of reasons.  Photo Credit: Sprout Social Deleting Facebook Friends I read the following  article  about why you should delete friends on Facebook and what is the ideal number of friends one should have as well. I decided not to check how many 'friends' I had until I finished the article, but also not until after I asked my husband how many he had. In real life a person can only sustain 150 relationships, anything beyond that is a strain on the cognitive capacity of the human brain, that is called Dunbar's Number. Thinking about myself in the real world and not in terms of social media, I thought about my wor...

Technology, What is it Good For?

Photo credit: Learn Religions In my first blog post I basically said I was a slave to technology, and it ruled me instead of me ruling it.  Here  is the link to that blog post. I have to say that while my views on technology have changed, (I will talk more about this in a moment) me being ruled by it has not changed. I still use my iPhone and laptop the same amount that I did before, but I do use it differently.   What's changed Having to create a blog was definitely outside my comfort zone when I started this class. This class and being required to blog are the only reasons why I would have a one in the first place. I always had the thought that no one would be interested in reading my opinion about certain things, so I had no need to do a blog. Without going into too much detail about the class I had to take, everything that my professor had us do was new to me, other than using Canvas as the platform to view assignments. Everything that I did was annoying at first...

Digital Tattoos

Tattoos... 1 in 5 people have one and it is over $1.65 billion industry. Typically, once someone has gotten a tattoo they are stuck with it for life, unless they want to spend a significant amount of money and pain getting it removed. Just like a skin tattoo, what is put online on the internet about a person is out there probably for life. Just because a post or picture has been removed does not mean that it gone forever, it can be found. Doing a data mine on yourself can help you see what is out there about you on the internet, some of which you may have not had any idea that it was.  I looked at seven different sites to see what I could find out about myself. I used Safari and Microsoft Edge as my internet browsers to test the difference in what I would find. I also used variations of my name, sometimes including middle name or initial. I did the same thing with my maiden name and various middle name additions.   Fast People Search Using my name Brittany Kearby, I was a...

You've got personality... or do you?

Aha, the joys of taking personality tests, what couldn't be more fun? I personally enjoy taking them just to see where I stand with certain things. Majority of them out there are long and boring and tend to not give any insights to the person taking the test. I took three different personality tests to see where I would fall depending on what sort of test it was. I was not surprised by some of the results, but other results I was flabbergasted by.  FiveThirtEight The information below appears to be a lot to take in at first glance because of the many screenshots but it really isn't once you look at it. There are a lot of graphs, which take up a good chunk of the screenshots.  Photo Credits: author This personality test gave results based off of the five main traits: openness to experience, agreeableness, conscientiousness, negative emotionality, and extraversion all of those main traits break down into sub traits, but I will not be getting into that currently. Overall, I am av...

Accessibility for All!!

Accessibility for all! While that should be a given no matter what is being talked about, library, school, playground etc. that is not always the case. Everyone likes to believe what is being done or what they themselves are doing and creating will be helpful to all learner types, yet some fall short. Like the title of this blog says, accessibility for ALL not just some, it does not matter what their disability is or if they struggle learning in the traditional way!  Photo credit: Depositphotos Universal Design for Learning How can we, as people of society, when creating just about anything be mindful of all the different types of learners out there and what might work for one will not work for another? Universal Design for Learning or UDL is the concept to make that happen. UDL's definition is: a concept that identifies what barriers there may be given the situation that could cause some not to be able to understand the material, and then has multiple ways to get everyone ...

Is Common Sense, Common Sense?

Photo credit: The interaction Design Foundation  How does technology play a role in young people's life? What are the benefits of having technology at the fingertips of the current generation so easily? What good or bad can come from the use of so much technology?  When asked to do a deep dive into an educational research technology website I chose  Common Sense . I chose this one over  Project Tomorrow ,  Educause , and  Pew Research  because I found the reports to be more intriguing. It also helped that a fair amount of the reports were geared more towards the age group I would like to work with when I get my MLIS degree. The name of the research technology, Common Sense , to me was a nice play on words, even if they did not intend it to be. The reports I took my statistic from, I choose based on the 'common sense' idea/concept. What might be considered common sense to one person would not even be on the radar for another. So again, the play on words...

Are you active or passive in your learning?

Every person learns in different ways, what works for one person may not work for another. Studies have shown that if a person is interested in the topic, they are learning about they are more likely to remember the information later on. On the flip side, if the person is not interested and the learning is not engaging, they are more likely to forget the information or zone out completely and not retain anything. This is where active learning or teaching comes into play. For more information on how a person learns follow this link  Learning .  What is active learning? In my opinion the best way to describe what active learning is, is to say what it is not first. Some great examples would be having students use their technology to watch a video about a certain topic or give a lecture and require the students to write the notes down in order for them to have the information. Basically, it is a one-dimensional way of learning that may or may not work for everyone and does not acc...
